It is true that most couples book their weddings well in advance but if you’re looking for a last-minute wedding photographer fear not! Your saving knight in shinny photography gear might still be free on your wedding date. So if you’re not one of those couples who like to obsess about envelope colours 2 years ahead of the date, you’re not alone. In fact, there’s a whole bunch of cool couples with an unconventional streak that for one reason or another have left their wedding plans to the so-called last minute.
Are all wedding photographers unavailable on short notice?
Yes and no. Most full time, wedding-only photographers rely solely on weddings. They’ll fill their diaries well before the year has begun exhibiting in wedding fairs, tagging every human they meet on Instagram and generally living in a wedding photography universe. Some photographers even know exactly what shots they’ll be taking on your wedding day as they all look a bit samey. They can even photoshop your faces onto their previous wedding photos and voilà, there you have it. Your perfect wedding photos before you’ve even said I do. They might be a bit cheesy and impersonal but that’s how weddings are and who are we to argue? No! that’s not how all weddings are and should be and we totally don’t have to fit in!
So while you have wedding photographers, you also have photographers who also shoot weddings. Personally, I really love takings photos at weddings, so I don’t overbook to keep them personal. Like me, there are photographers who’ve had lot’s of experience photographing all types of weddings over the years, but also bring their experience from other practices. We tend to be a bit less conventional, but that is a good thing.
So you’ve left your wedding to the last minute
Not all people are the same and you might just be one of these couples who’s lifestyle and schedule means that you don’t always know what you’ll be doing 12 months in advance. We got married with 4 weeks notice and we had a great wedding day that we’ll always remember. If you tend to book things late you probably like the surprises that come with it. You don’t have to go 100% according to plan but you get a ton of surprises and experiences along the way. Or maybe you just had to book late. I would say that 75% of my bookings not more than 2 months in advance. I’ve even had several next day wedding bookings. Why not, some of the best weddings I’ve been to were last-minute and they were that much more relaxed, unexpected and fun for it.
What you don’t want to compromise on for your wedding
Well, the photographer of course! No, no, I’m just teasing. There are other things in life even more significant than booking a wedding photographer. If there is one bit of wisdom I can hopefully impart from my own experience, it is to give your wedding the importance it deserves. Even if it’s last-minute, local or small and intimate. It’s going to be a significant day you’ll both remember. Whatever you plan doesn’t have to be “perfect”, just make sure it’s aligned to your style and likings. When the day comes, it won’t matter much when it was planned.
If you’re reading this post, you’re probably getting married soon. So if we don’t get a chance to talk, have a beautiful wedding day and stay special!
And if you’re looking for a wedding photographer, you know where to find me.
